Alison Hughes
Working for Cultural Diversity

Alison Hughes (MA BA BEd) has worked with English language learners and instructors for the last 20 years in Canada and the United States. Since 2001, she has developed and delivered ESL programs for adult learners at Saint John College, as well as teaching university Business Communications courses and facilitating cross-cultural workshops. Alison was a presenter at the TESL Canada 2008 National Conference and the TESL NB conferences 2004, 2005 and 2006. She has an Education degree from St. Thomas University, and Master and Bachelor degrees from the University of New Brunswick. Her book, Paddling in Paradise: Sea Kayaking Adventures in Atlantic Canada (Goose Lane Editions, 2002) was a finalist for the American 2003 Independent Publisher Book Award in the Travel-Guidebook category and is now in its second printing.

Ginette Hébert
Interlibrary loans with Relais International: The Atlantic Scholarly Information Network experience

Ginette Hébert (Consultant) works in the Library Science World for the past 19 years. Graduated from the Algonquin College as a Library Technician in Ottawa (Ontario), she filled several positions and specialized as a Team leader and Manager. She worked for several institutions in Ottawa from 1990 to 2005; Natural Resources Canada, Saint-Vincent Hospital, Statistics Canada, Bibliothèque municipale de Hull, International Council for Canadian Studies and Elections Canada. She moved to New Brunswick in 2005, worked the Moncton Public Library for a short while and obtained the Interlibrary Loan Team Leader’s position at the Université de Moncton where she implemented the Relais ILL system and played a member role within the ASIN Group (Atlantic Scholarly Information Network). She is a mother of three boys and is now living in Quispamis (near Saint John) after her husband was relocated for job purposes. While she is offering her services as a consultant, she is in her last year to complete her Master degree in Business Administration from the Université de Moncton.

She will be sharing her Relais/ASIN experience with you in both official languages.

Carole MacFarquhar
Services to Young Adults

Carole Linton MacFarquhar is the Young Adult & Adult Services Librarian for the Saint John Free Public Library. She graduated from University of Toronto with a BA and MLS. She worked for the North York Public Library, for 17 years. During that time, she managed the Audio Visual Department’s 16 mm film collection, introduced videos and CDs to the branch collections, represented audio visual and young adult resources in the Collection Management Department, and was a branch manager at several regional branches. After moving to Saint John, she turned to school libraries, where she volunteered in her son’s elementary and middle school libraries. From 2004 to 2006 she filled a variety of contract positions with the Saint John Free Public Library, and accepted her current position in 2007. A highlight so far has been the creation of the Teen Zone. During her career, she has been an active participant in library associations, particularly the Ontario Library Association and the Association of Professional Librarians of New Brunswick. She is also a member of APLA.
